We are saddened to share with AWTE members the passing of Phil Bocarro, just two weeks shy of her 100th birthday.
Phil was a true trailblazer, joining the airline industry at a time when few women held managerial roles. Working with Air India, she broke down barriers, opening doors for the next generation of women in travel to pursue more senior roles. A mentor to many, her guidance and support left a lasting impact on those who followed.
Phil joined AWTE in 1964 and served as Chair from 1972 to 1973. She also led as Chair of IFWTO, the International Federation of Women’s Travel Organisations, a global body to which AWTE’s London branch belonged until its closure in 2006.
Beyond her professional achievements, Phil was passionate about golf, a joy that took her to courses worldwide. Her love for the game was so infectious that she even inspired me to take it up in the early 1970s. She was immensely proud to be named President of her local golf club, becoming the first woman to hold that role. Phil also cherished her time with her extended family.
We will fondly remember Phil for her enthusiasm, professionalism, warmth, and constant support. Her bright smile and positive outlook left an indelible mark on AWTE and everyone who had the privilege of knowing her.
